Kin: Push Notifications Overview

Kin app

This article applies to the Kin app (now part of Reactiv). If your app was built with Reactiv, see the Reactiv support docs instead.

Push notifications let you reach shoppers directly on their phones with launches, promotions and reminders.

Who can receive push notifications

  • Shoppers need to allow notifications when the app asks. On iOS and Android 13+, the app asks during onboarding. On Android 12 and earlier, notifications are on by default.
  • Shoppers don't need to be signed in. Signed-out shoppers still receive general notifications, so push can reach more of your app audience than email or SMS lists.
  • Notifications aimed at a specific audience only reach shoppers the app can identify, for example signed-in shoppers in a Klaviyo list or segment.
  • A shopper with the app on more than one device receives notifications on each device.
  • Devices that are off or offline receive notifications when they reconnect.

Encouraging opt-in

You can customize the title, subtitle and image on the notification opt-in prompt. See What You Can Change Without an App Update.

What a notification can include

  • Title
  • Message
  • Image thumbnail
  • Landing page: where the shopper goes when they tap, such as a product, a collection, the cart or a piece of content. See Deep Links & Universal Links.

Notifications can't contain video or carousels directly. Link to that content instead.

In-app notification inbox

Every notification you send also appears in the app's Notifications inbox, available at the top of the More menu.

  • Notifications are listed newest first.
  • Each shows the title, message, time, your logo and an optional thumbnail. Tapping it opens its landing page.
  • The app icon and the in-app bell show an unread count. Opening the inbox clears it, and tapping a notification marks it as read.

Abandoned cart notifications don't appear in the inbox.

Measuring results

Deliveries, taps and attributed sales for each notification are shown in your Kin dashboard. See Understanding Your Analytics Dashboard.

Troubleshooting

A shopper isn't receiving notifications Check that notifications are allowed for the app in the phone's settings. Reinstalling the app, restoring it to a new phone or clearing app data (Android) resets the device's notification registration. Opening the app once afterwards registers it again.
