Kin: Sign-in Options

Kin app

This article applies to the Kin app (now part of Reactiv). If your app was built with Reactiv, see the Reactiv support docs instead.

Shoppers sign in to your Kin app with their customer account on your Shopify store. They're then signed in on your website pages inside the app too, so account pages and checkout recognize them.

Sign-in methods

Email and password (classic Shopify accounts)

This is the default. Onboarding offers Sign in, Create account and Continue as guest.

  • Create account asks for email, password and password confirmation. Passwords must be longer than 5 characters. The shopper is signed in automatically afterwards.
  • Forgot password emails a reset link. The shopper can resend it after 30 seconds. The link opens the app, or the reset can be finished in a browser.

Passwordless sign-in

When passwordless sign-in is turned on, shoppers enter their email and receive a one-time code instead of using a password. You can also choose to ask for the shopper's name when they register.

Shopify Multipass

For Shopify Plus stores with Multipass enabled, the app uses Multipass to keep shoppers signed in on your storefront and checkout. Passwordless sign-in, and Facebook, Google, and Apple sign-in, all use this. It also covers headless storefronts and stores where checkout is on a separate domain.

Multipass works with Shopify's legacy customer accounts. After you turn on new Customer Accounts, these sign-in methods turn off.

Facebook, Google, and Apple

Settings → Integrations → Social Login turns Facebook and Google on or off. Both need Multipass, and both need a current app (Kin platform 1.0.520 or later on iOS, 1.0.260 or later on Android). Apple sign-in uses the same Multipass connection when the app offers it.

Shopify Customer Accounts

If your store uses Shopify's new Customer Accounts, see Shopify Customer Accounts.

Guest browsing

Shoppers can browse and shop as guests unless you turn on Require sign-in in your onboarding settings. Guests still receive general push notifications if they allow them.

How long shoppers stay signed in

  • The shopper's session is renewed each time they open the app.
  • If a shopper hasn't opened the app for about 40 days, they need to sign in again.

Signing out

  • Shoppers can sign out from the More menu. They're asked to confirm.
  • If a shopper taps your website's own Log out link inside the app, they're signed out of the app as well.
  • Signing out clears the shopper's website session in the app, including their cart, and stops personalized push notifications to that device.

Requirement: keep the Kin Shopify app installed

The Kin Shopify app connects shoppers' app sessions to their Shopify customer accounts. It uses an app proxy on your store at /tools/mobile-auth and needs permission to read customers.

Don't uninstall the Kin Shopify app or change its app proxy. If you do, shoppers can't sign in or stay signed in.

Personalization

After a shopper signs in, the app uses audience lists and segments to personalize the For You feed and notifications. Sources are Klaviyo, Shopify, Ometria, Emarsys, and Kin's own Logged in and Logged out audiences. See For You Feed Content.

Troubleshooting

Shoppers can't sign in, or keep getting signed out Check that the Kin Shopify app is still installed and its app proxy is unchanged. If it is, email support@reactiv.ai.

A shopper's cart was emptied Signing out clears the cart. This is expected.
