Kin: Shopify Customer Accounts
This article applies to the Kin app (now part of Reactiv). If your app was built with Reactiv, see the Reactiv support docs instead.
If your store uses Shopify's new Customer Accounts, your Kin app can sign shoppers in through Shopify's own login instead of the classic email and password form. It's turned on per store, and it's off by default.
Shopify Customer Accounts sign-in is currently available in the iOS Kin app. For Android, email support@reactiv.ai.
Before you enable it
- Turn on new Customer Accounts in your Shopify admin.
- Ask the Kin team to enable Customer Accounts sign-in for your app. Email support@reactiv.ai. The team sets up the connection to Shopify for you.
- Headless (Hydrogen) storefronts are supported.
What shoppers see
- On the sign-in screen, the shopper enters their email and taps Continue. There's no password field, Forgot password link or Create account button, because Shopify handles accounts.
- Shopify's login page opens inside the app. The shopper finishes signing in there, usually with a code Shopify emails to them.
- The app signs the shopper in on your website pages in the background, then closes onboarding.
- New shoppers can be asked for their first and last name. The name is saved to their Shopify customer account.
Continue as guest is still controlled by your Require sign-in onboarding setting.
Staying signed in
- Sessions last across app launches and are refreshed automatically.
- If a session can't be refreshed, the shopper continues as a guest and needs to sign in again.
Switching an existing app to Customer Accounts
Shoppers who signed in with the classic email and password are signed out when Customer Accounts is turned on, and need to sign in again with the new flow. The same happens if you later turn Customer Accounts off. Consider letting your customers know before you switch.
Signing out
If a shopper taps a Shopify Sign out link inside the app (for example, Sign out or Sign out of all devices on the account page), they're also signed out of the app.
Troubleshooting
Shoppers see a generic sign-in error This usually means the app can't reach Shopify's Customer Accounts configuration for your storefront domain. Check that:
- New Customer Accounts is turned on in Shopify.
- Your storefront domain hasn't changed since the feature was set up.
If both look right, email support@reactiv.ai with the time of the failed attempt.
